Walking holidays refers to holidays where people walk across certain areas of different countries, or indeed pleasant areas of their own country.Walking Holidays The best way to go about planning a walking holiday is to speak to a local travel agent who has special leaflets about walking holidays which will guide you through the process of booking, how high a reputation the company has and what you will need to do in order to plan for the walk.

One of the great things about walking holidays is they are so diverse. You do not need any previous experience in walking, although a certain level of fitness is preferred. If, however, you are a veteran walker there are still plenty of destinations meant to challenge you, as well as take you to some destinations of breathtaking appearance. If you are new to walking, it is recommended that you use a company specialising in guided walks. Also, think of the destination of your holiday as some areas are going to much more difficult to walk in than others. The company you decided to book with should have all of the details about this though.

Some of the travelling essentials you will need are:

  • Mosquito nets, depending on destination
  • Sleeping bag lines, in case of rain, or cold
  • Packing systems
  • Adaptors and plugs, if you plan on using local resources rather than camping
  • Special walking boots
  • A walking stick (aid)
  • Backpacks and luggage carrying equipment
  • A penknife

Walking HolidaysSome holiday companies will allow you to hire all of the gear you will need during the holiday. They will tend to have you arrive at a lodge for the briefing of the walking holiday and introductions. Then, usually on your first walk you will spend the day getting used to the equipment and the area, returning in the evening to spend the night at the lodge. After a couple of days some walks will take you further a field and you will have to camp out during the night in tents, or under the stars, depending on the destination.

One of the many reasons that people enjoying walking is because it is such a great way to view the landscape around you. Walking across hills and valleys you can get a really up-close feel for the environment and animals that make up the different habitats. Indeed, you can even plan your walking holiday depending on your favourite places to go. For example, if you enjoy the fresh sea air then coastal walks are a must. If however you enjoy high altitude and fantastic views then hill, or mountain walking is the best thing to go for.
